Much like the recent storm tore through the northwest the night before, City blew Manchester United away at the their home ground. It was a convincing three-nil win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their title credentials as they reinforced their position at the league summit.

Back-to-Back Losses for United

This outcome signalled back-to-back league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the initial occasion since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their championship aspirations in serious doubt.

United’s capacity to juggle domestic and European football with a limited roster has been a frequently analyzed issue since they earned a place in the Champions League. Looking at the calendar, it always seemed this was the period that would seriously challenge this capability. Unfortunately for the away side, they looked fatigued throughout, the historic win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a a few alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided freshness, although the exclusion of the high-performing Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

The hosts, in comparison, have fewer workload worries. The City coach made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her first start since recovering from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The pressure started to accumulate for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a show of the power from Manchester City whose dynamic attack controlled and tore United open with a superb opening period showing that saw them score three goals in 21 minutes.

This put the hosts firmly in control and saw the visitors struggling. In advance of this fixture, United had allowed just a handful in this domestic competition but they disintegrated in the presence of City’s offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

Goals Galore

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the break. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the center from the back, the play became spacious for the hosts. The prominent Kerstin Casparij collected the pass on the right before sending a accurate ground pass for Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a quick change in the ball saw Lauren Hemp given the room to drive a shot home from range.

Second Half

The primary substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to shift the momentum of the game. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came nearest, rattling the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to produce a single shot on target.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their advantage when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any opponent who placed above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding situation after nine matches.
