On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called extreme,” he said to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these services may be challenging to finance. Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
